In the Nursery class, children aged 3-5 years are grouped together. Mixed age-grouping is ideal; as older children become role models to the younger ones while the younger ones learn a lot from the older ones. They flow into one another (osmosis). Also known as vertical grouping, this arrangement helps children to develop their independence, self-confidence, self-esteem and also respect for the rights of others. In addition, they learn to take turns and work in a team. Children enjoy freedom within limits with boundaries defined by basic ground rules. More so, the children are engaged in a lot of physical activities that keep the hands busy, after all, Montessori described the hand as the tool of the mind and the instrument of intelligence.
Much premium is placed on observation since ‘follow the child’ is practically impossible without necessary observation skills.
